Last weekend provided skiers with ideal sliding and sunny conditions. For this last weekend of January, the snow is there in abundance and the weather looks a little more gloomy depending on the altitudes.
The ski conditions are good in all the massifs. Thus, for the Northern Alps, we find 30 to 50 cm at 1,200 m, 50 to 80 cm at 1,500 m and 120 to 300 cm on the peaks above 2,500 m. In the Jura, from 20 to 30 cm at 1,000 m and from 40 to 70 cm above 1,300 m.
Skiing is expensive… but
Before any February white holidays, it is therefore possible to leave, near your home, to ski for the day. We have selected the surrounding resorts and ranked them according to the cost of an adult day pass. Stations offering a pass for less than €30 are shown in blue on the map. Packages between €31 and €50 in orange and packages over €50 in burgundy.
In 2023, the day ski pass costs an average of €37 in the Alps. This is also the median value: 50% of packages are cheaper, 50% of packages are more expensive. The highest price in Val Thorens is €72 per day.
On the interactive map, the prices of the ski passes indicated (at the counter) are those communicated by the resorts, which are responsible for their accuracy.
Prices are subject to change during the season. Contact the stations for more information.

Skiing is expensive, yes, but by looking a little, you can find good deals. All French resorts offer interesting promotions on stay packages for holidaymakers. What about day skiing for local customers?
Good deals for the day, it exists… on the internet
The first advice, not, if not impossible with the family, you have to ski outside of school holidays and during the week. Or later in the season, in the spring, it’s often cheaper on the package side.
For those who ski regularly, a multitude of “loyalty” cards, subject to membership, then offer advantageous daily rates. Among the subscriptions, the Passe Montagne card allows you to ski at a reduced rate in more than 100 resorts. It’s the same principle with Skiogrande, the map of the major areas of Maurienne, Ski Atout Prix, Ski à la Carte, Leisure and More… You can benefit from promotions, reductions…
Be aware that resorts almost always offer a discount on packages booked via the internet.
If you want to pay less, plan ahead! Most good day ski deals are made exclusively through an online purchase. It is sometimes also possible to benefit from it at the cash desk in low season, but very often only from Monday to Friday and almost always outside school holidays.
Ski on Saturday
Saturday is often very interesting because there are fewer people on the slopes and the package is much cheaper.
This is the case, for example, with large areas such as Sybelles (€25, instead of €50.20, every Saturday of the season for 136 pistes), 3 Vallées (€56.60 instead of €72). Saturdays are half price (€22.50 instead of €45) all season on the whole ski area Espace Diamant (Val d’Arly-Mont Blanc). Saturdays are also cheaper in La Plagne, Les Arcs, Les Gets, Morzine…
Opt for an “all-inclusive ski” day
Another idea for cheaper skiing, buy a transport+pass package, for example with Skimania from Lyon. This formula, which links transport and ski lifts, also exists with the coaches of the department of Isère and its Skiligne offer (from €29), in La Clusaz (from Annecy), in Aillons-Margeriaz (from Chambéry and Aix -the baths)…
Finally, for less ruin, especially in terms of accommodation, prefer small resorts, next to the most popular while enjoying the same ski areas. They are often at a lower altitude but connected to the domains. Example, Auris-en-Oisans instead of Alpe d’Huez.
Weather: gloomy forecast for the weekend of January 28-29
After a very cold week and snowfall, the thaw was more pronounced this Wednesday. Until then, the precipitation is low on the Jura/Northern Alps side but the snow resists above 700-900 meters.
Clouds at low altitude
Depending on the massifs and the altitudes, after a few days of sunshine, it’s a little more gloomy this weekend in the Northern Alps and the Jura, especially in the middle mountains. We will go from a gray and cloudy Friday day to a brighter weekend. Higher up, the sky will be clearer, just cluttered here and there with a veil of cloud.
In the high mountains, the accumulation of snow is very substantial. The risk of avalanches is significant at high altitude, as is the risk of wet snow slides lower down, down to the lower mountains. Great caution is therefore recommended.
