Searches, “in connection” with the Iconic real estate project, under construction in the center of Nice, are underway this Thursday morning, in particular in premises in the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis, learned 20 minutes with the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office. It is the public procurement service that would be in the sights of the investigators.
The operation is part of a judicial investigation, opened in November 2022 “of the heads of influence peddling, organized fraud, abuse of corporate and forged assets and use of forgery”, specifies the same source. It is monitored by the National Jurisdiction in charge of the fight against organized crime (Junalco).
A targeted public official?
Requested by 20 minutes, the community indicated at the end of the morning that the search was in progress “in a building to the west of the city”. “Even though the city and the metropolis are unaware of everything at this stage of the procedure, on the nature or on the scope of the investigations, the director general of the services was asked to respond quickly to all requests made by the investigators” , said a spokeswoman.
The prosecution does not specify, at this stage, what or who would be clearly targeted. “If it turns out that a public official is implicated in this procedure, the metropolis would then initiate suspension measures”, advanced for its part the metropolis.
A delayed and complicated real estate project
Launched in 2016, the Iconic project, a 19,000 m2 complex designed to link Nice train station to Avenue Jean-Médecin, one of the main arteries of the city, displays protruding edges reminiscent of those of a diamond. An explosive architecture which had aroused a wave of contrasting reactions.
Scheduled to be completed at the end of 2022, the site, led by the promoter La Compagnie de Phalsbourg, has been delayed, in particular because of the Covid-19 pandemic. It should be delivered in the spring of 2023. The complex, which should include shops, offices, sports halls and the first Hilton hotel on the Côte d’Azur, in particular, should also include a room in the National Theater of Nice ( TNN), destroyed to allow the continuation of a green flow in the city center.
This option was finally abandoned last November. The space within the Iconic project is ultimately not suitable, according to Christian Estrosi. The mayor had announced that it will ultimately be the Roman arenas of Cimiez, on the heights of the Riviera capital, which will host theatrical performances.
